To this end, police sources said they would take the self-confessed mastermind of the killing former MP Dr Abdul Quader Khan under fresh remand in a case filed with Sundarganj police station last Saturday for possessing illegal firearms.
After arresting former MP Quader, police raided his home in Pashchim Chhaprahati village on February 23. There they found only one pistol, although Quader informed the police that he buried two pistols there.
His own licenced firearm, also used by the assassins, was submitted to the police before the arrest.
A police source said after taking Quader under remand in the first two days after his arrest, they had been tiptoeing around him on account of his status and old age. On the third day when he suddenly declared that he would confess in court, the interrogators were surprised but relieved. He was taken to court quickly.
But, this put police in another problem. In his confessional statement, Quader avoided providing information about the source of firearms and the question of who had trained three inexperienced local young men to use guns.
Police said they had information that Quader had trained the killers himself. But they are still in the dark about the source of the weapons.
A senior Gaibandha police officer told the Dhaka Tribune that they would press charges in the MP Liton murder case soon.
“If we cannot find the source of the guns, we will take Quader under remand,” the official said.
The official adde that the guns could have been obtained from the border districts nearby where illegal firearms are more easily available. Police are trying to find out the route Quader used to source his firearms.
“Who knows, it could bring major breakthrough in illegal firearm trading,” the official added.Chandan’s in-law arrestedA team of Sundarganj police arrested Subal Kumar Roy, the cousin of Quader’s close aide Chandan Kumar Roy from Rangpur Medical College Hospital last night.
Chandan, who has been missing since the murder, is suspected to have been Quader’s key informant on Liton’s activities and whereabouts.
An investigator seeking anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune Subal was Quader’s original recruit for the assassination.
“Almost a year ago, they planned that Subal would shoot Quader at his club near Gaibandha Railway Station. But Subal fell ill and then those three were recruited,” the investigator said.
