The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit has detained two suspected members of a new faction of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (New JMB) from Dhaka's Khilkhet.
“They were planning to carry out a car bomb attack,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam said on Saturday.
A special CTTC team raided Nikunjo and detained Nayeem Ahmed alias Anas and Anowar Hossain with 30 detonators on Friday night.
“They are members of New JMB. Nayeem worked with Basharuzzaman Chocolate at a private IT company in 2015,” Monirul said. “They joined New JMB together.”
Anwar owns a motor garage at Savar's Hemayetpur. He got involved with New JMB in 2015 after getting in touch with a JMB leader, according to Monirul.
“Anwar has links with JMB militant Sarowar Jahan, Ripon, Noman, Al Bani and Don,” the DMP officer told the media.
Quoting initial interrogation, Monirul said, “Anwar had arranged a car bomb attack training at his garage at the advise of New JMB Shura member.”
