Kamrul at court on last day of deposition

A Sylhet court yesterday completed recording of testimonies of prosecution witnesses and set tomorrow for cross-examination of the 13 accused in teenager Rajon murder case.

The court of Metropolitan Sessions Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha set October 25 for the prosecution and the defence arguments, following which the court will set date for delivering verdict in the sensational case.

The verdict would be pronounced shortly, public prosecutor Misbah Uddin told reporters.

Yesterday, investigation officer, DB Inspector Suranjit Talukder, deposed as the 36th and last prosecution witness. Depositions in the fast-track case began on October 1.

Earlier in the day, police produced Kamrul Islam, the prime accused, before the court. The defence submitted two applications – one for bail of the accused and the other for recalling all the accused, but the court rejected both the petitions.

People present on the court premises chanted slogans demanding capital punishment of Kamrul Islam. Some of the activists also threw shoes at him around 11:30am. They also demonstrated when Kamrul was taken to the police van after the court proceedings.

The family members of 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, who was tortured to death on July 8 by the accused, demanded death penalty for the killers. Two of the accused are still on the run.

On Thursday, a police team brought Kamrul back from Saudi Arabia. He fled the country allegedly with the help of some officials of Jalalabad police on July 10 but was caught by expatriate Bangladeshis in Jeddah on July 13.
