The High Court has ordered Narail police to arrest the man who tortured his wife by tying her up to a tree in the district’s Lohagara upazila.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order yesterday and told police to arrest the accused within 48 hours.
The court also directed the deputy commissioner of Narail and the OC of Lohagara police station to submit a report on May 18 on whether the accused have been arrested or not.
The order came following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh seeking the arrest of the accused.
Besides, the court asked the district’s deputy commissioner and superintendent of police, as well as the upazila nirbahi officer of Lohagara and all authorities concerned to ensure proper medical treatment and security for the victim.
The accused, Shafiqul Sheikh, along with some family members, allegedly tied up his wife Bobita Khanam to a tree trunk and beat her on suspicion of stealing in Salbarad village on April 30.
At one point of the torture, Bobita fell unconscious, and her husband locked her up inside a shop in a village market nearby. The police rescued Bobita after they were notified. She is now being treated at Narail Sadar Hospital.
Bobita’s mother filed a case with Lohagara police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, while the police arrested two people on May 5.
The court also issued a ruling asking the government why legal action should not be taken against the accused.
