100 sued over police attack in Gopalganj, 7 arrested

A case has been filed against 100 people over an attack on police and vandalism of a police vehicle in Gopalganj, with 40 named and 60 unidentified accused.

Seven people arrested in connection with the incident were shown arrested in the case and sent to jail by a court order on Sunday.

Police said Sub-Inspector Md Ful Mia of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station filed the case on Sunday afternoon over an attack on police, assault and vehicle vandalism allegedly carried out while chanting “Joy Bangla”.

The seven accused were sent to Gopalganj court after initial questioning. The court subsequently ordered their transfer to jail.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Aminul Islam said leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and Jubo League staged a flash procession on Saturday in support of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, chanting “Joy Bangla”.

A police patrol team encountered the procession in the Burimar Gachtala area of Raghunathpur in Sadar upazila. When police tried to stop the march, the participants allegedly attacked officers with sticks and locally made weapons and vandalised a police pickup van.

Sub-Inspector Ful Mia and another police officer were injured in the attack, the OC said.

The seven arrested have been sent to jail by court order, while efforts are underway to arrest others involved in the incident, he added.
