Ex-MP Abdul Mannan sent to jail in anti-terrorism case

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered former Meherpur-1 MP Professor Abdul Mannan to be sent to jail after rejecting his bail petition in an anti-terrorism case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order, said SI Arif Reza of the prosecution department.

Earlier on Sunday, Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Abdul Mannan from his residence in Dhanmondi at around 6am.

Investigation officer Inspector Md Masudur Rahman of the Tejgaon Zonal Team produced him before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail. Lawyer Al Imran Mukul, representing Abdul Mannan, sought bail, while the prosecution opposed the application.

After the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered him to be sent to jail. However, Abdul Mannan was not produced in the courtroom during the hearing.

According to the case statement, on the morning of June 18, 35-40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League, including Nibas Majumder, brought out a procession near Mohakhali Bus Terminal under the jurisdiction of Tejgaon Industrial Area police station.

The allegations state that the procession involved anti-government slogans and crude bomb explosions, causing panic among the public and involving anti-state activities.

On the same day, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Zahidul Haque of Tejgaon Industrial Area police station filed the case.
