Menon sent to jail after three-day remand in July uprising murder case

Workers Party President and former minister Rashed Khan Menon has been sent to jail after completing a three-day remand in a murder case over the killing of Anwar Hossain Patwari during the July uprising.

Menon was produced before a Dhaka court on Monday after the remand period ended. Inspector Nasir Uddin Sarker of the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Dhaka Metro North Division and also the investigation officer in the case, sought an order to keep him in jail.

Following a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam ordered that Menon be sent to jail.

SI Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution division confirmed the matter. He said the court placed Menon a three-day remand on February 17 last year. After questioning him for three days with the court’s permission, the investigation officer sought his detention in jail, and the court granted the application.

Anwar Hossain Patwari was shot dead at Mirpur-10 roundabout in Dhaka on August 5, 2024, during the July uprising. In November that year, his father Al Amin Patwari filed a murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station against 150 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
