Murder accused flees court again, cop suspended

A murder accused escaped from a Dhaka court for the second time on Tuesday, prompting authorities to suspend the police constable responsible for guarding him and form a three-member committee to investigate the incident.

Shariful fled from the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam on Tuesday. He had also escaped from court custody in 2025, making this his second escape from a Dhaka court.

A case has since been filed against him with Kotwali Police Station over the escape.

Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel, deputy commissioner of the DMP Prosecution Division, confirmed the matter.

“Shariful, a remanded accused in a case filed with Kotwali Police Station, cleverly slipped out of his handcuffs and escaped from the court. He had been brought from jail as the case was scheduled for a hearing,” he said.

According to Sohel, Shariful took advantage of a moment when the police officer guarding him was distracted and escaped through another door. Police are working to arrest him, he added.

SI Md Morshed Alam, in-charge of the CMM court lock-up, filed the case against Shariful, while Constable Abdul Alim, who was responsible for guarding him, was temporarily suspended.

A three-member committee has also been formed to investigate the incident.

According to the DMP Prosecution Division, Shariful was brought to court on Tuesday for the scheduled hearing, but the proceedings could not take place as the witness failed to appear.

Later, Constable Abdul Alim was taking Shariful to the lock-up when the accused allegedly slipped out of his handcuffs and escaped through another door.

Shariful had previously escaped from court custody on June 19, 2025, while being produced before the Dhaka Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in a case over the murder of teenager Jisan Hossain filed with Khilgaon Police Station.

After the hearing, Shariful allegedly assaulted a police officer while being taken from the courtroom to the lock-up, slipped out of his handcuffs and fled.

On the same day, Md Ripon Molla, then in charge of the court lock-up, filed a case against Shariful with Kotwali Police Station over the incident.

Shariful was brought from jail to court on Tuesday in connection with that case.

Shariful is the son of late Shafik Ahmed of Haripur village in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur.
