New Gini Properties attack: Ex-Major Gen Golam Mohiuddin placed in three-day remand

A Dhaka court on Thursday, October 1, placed retired Major Gen Golam Mohiuddin on a 3-day remand for questioning over an attack on New Gini Properties in the ECB Chattar area of the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam passed the remand order following an application by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

Prosecution department Sub-Inspector Tarekur Rahman confirmed the information.

The DB of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Golam Mohiuddin from a residence in Segunbagicha under Ramna police station at around 2:45pm on Wednesday.

Investigation Officer Inspector Jehad Hossain of the DB produced him before the court and sought a 5-day remand.

Advocate Anisur Rahman argued in favor of the remand on behalf of the complainant.

Dhaka Bar Association President Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan and Abul Kalam Khan sought cancellation of the remand and bail on behalf of the accused.

Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan said: “New Guinea Properties is a land grabber. They have even occupied the roads used for movement. This is a planned case. He has been made accused No 4 in this case. It has been alleged that he took Tk 7,000 from the pocket of a person named Parvez. He is a former major general and a doctor. And he would take Tk 7,000. This is a case based on false allegations. We seek cancellation of the remand and bail.”

Abul Kalam Khan said: “He was not at the scene. He was the general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra Dal at Mirpur Government Dental Hospital. He is currently working at Evercare Hospital. We seek cancellation of his remand and bail.”

After hearing both sides, the court ordered his 3-day remand.

Earlier on Thursday, the same court placed 3 people, including Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament (MP) Abdul Gafur, on a 3-day remand for questioning.

On Wednesday, 3 accused — Mamun, Md Aslam and Md Munna — were sent to 3-day remand.

An attack, vandalism and looting took place at New Gini Properties in South Manikdi near ECB Chattar on Saturday night. Content creator Salman Muqtadir’s “Brownfish Studio” at the housing project was also attacked.

Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, director of New Gini Properties, filed a case with Cantonment police station over the incident. The case names 13 people, including Major Gen Golam Mohiuddin, while another 150 to 200 unidentified people were made accused.

Police said a dispute over possession and dispossession of land has emerged as the preliminary issue in the investigation. However, the specific cause of the incident can be confirmed after the investigation.
