Four people, including a leader of the banned Awami League, have been sent to jail in a case filed over multiple crude bomb explosions in front of Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka. The court has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday on a five-day remand plea against them.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam passed the order on Sunday.
The accused are Md Rayhan Uddin, 35, office secretary of the Awami League’s Unit 6 under Ward 32 of Bangshal Police Station area of Dhaka South City, Russell Khan, 32, Ala Uddin, 28, and Abdullah Mashhur Ashrafi, 20.
DB police Inspector Mohammad Golam Mostofa, investigation officer of the Wari zone, sought five days’ remand for the accused.
SI Mohin Uddin of the prosecution department confirmed the matter, saying, “The investigation officer did not appear before the court. Therefore, the accused were sent to jail and the remand hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.”
Several crude bombs exploded in front of Jatrabari Police Station on the night of September 18.
After identifying a suspect from CCTV footage, police arrested Rayhan Uddin during a raid in the Bangshal area on Saturday.
Based on information provided by Rayhan, police later recovered four unexploded crude bombs wrapped in red cellophane tape and concealed in a sack of brick chips beside a pillar in the ground-floor parking area of a 10-storey building on Zain Saha Road in Lalbagh around 12:15am. The DMP bomb disposal unit later defused the devices.
Acting on information obtained during Rayhan’s interrogation, police conducted a raid in the Dogair area of Demra and arrested Russell, Ala Uddin and Abdullah.
Meanwhile, Jatrabari Police Station SI Jewel Rana filed a case under the Explosives Act on Saturday over the crude bomb explosions.
