Neighbor sent to jail over alleged rape of six-year-old

A Dhaka court on Friday sent Sumon Mia, a neighbor to jail over the alleged rape of a six-year-old child in Dhaka’s Shah Ali police station area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ismail passed the order following an application by the investigation officer in the case.

Shah Ali Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Osman Gani, the investigation officer, produced Sumon before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail.

Sub-Inspector Ila Moni of the prosecution department said there was no bail application on behalf of the accused. The court subsequently ordered him to be sent to jail.

Police arrested Sumon from a residence near the Shah Ali Royal City Pocket Gate at around 8pm on Thursday.

Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Public Relations Division, citing police and the police station, said: “A complaint was received that the child had been raped in the area at around 4:30pm on Wednesday.”

“Later, the child’s mother took her to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. After examination, doctors suspected that the child might have been raped. She was then referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.”

Niaz Mehedi further said: “When the child’s mother asked her, she mentioned Sumon, a tenant in the neighboring house.”

“The child alleged that Suman took her to his room and raped her.”

The child’s mother filed a case at Shah Ali Police Station on Thursday in connection with the incident.
