Former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque was released from jail on Wednesday after the Appellate Division upheld his bail in the last of nine cases filed against him, clearing the way for his release after nearly a year in custody.
He was released from the Special Central Jail in Keraniganj, Dhaka, at around 4:15pm, Additional Inspector General of Prisons Md Jahangir Kabir confirmed.
He said Khairul Haque was released in accordance with the rules after the jail authorities received copies of the relevant court orders.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year. He had remained in jail since then and was shown arrested in nine cases at different times.
On August 10, the High Court granted him interim bail in a case filed with Banani police station.
Khairul Haque had already secured bail in eight other cases. After that, the investigating officer applied to show him arrested in the Banani case.
On Monday, August 17, the Appellate Division upheld his bail in the case filed with Banani police under the attempted murder and Explosives Act.
The order removed the final legal hurdle to his release from jail.
However, Khairul Haque will not be allowed to leave the country without the court’s permission, as directed by the Appellate Division.
The Appellate Division also upheld the High Court’s order barring his arrest or harassment except in connection with the specific cases.
