Dipu Moni granted 12-hour parole

Former social welfare minister and lawmaker Dipu Moni has been granted 12-hour parole from 6am to 6pm on Thursday following an application after the death of her husband, Barrister Toufiq Nawaz.

Munshiganj Additional District Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter. He said the parole was granted following an application by her lawyer, although a four-day release had initially been sought.

Dipu Moni’s daughter, Tani Deepavali Nawaz, went to the Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday to submit the parole application.

The application was filed following the death of Barrister Toufiq Nawaz, Dipu Moni’s husband and an Awami League leader.

At around 1:45pm, Deepavali met Additional District Magistrate Rezaul Karim and submitted the application, according to her lawyer.

Dipu Moni’s lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam confirmed the matter. He said Deepavali had earlier visited her mother at Munshiganj District Jail around noon.

After leaving the jail, Deepavali went to the district administration office to submit the parole application.

Barrister Toufiq Nawaz, husband of former social welfare and education minister and lawmaker Dipu Moni, died at a private hospital on Tuesday night while undergoing treatment.

Dipu Moni is currently in Munshiganj District Jail.

Munshiganj District Jail Superintendent Md Jannat-ul Farhad had earlier said the authorities had not received any parole application.

He added that if an application was received, further action would be taken in accordance with the rules.
