A Dhaka court on Tuesday showed former additional inspector general of police (IGP) Iqbal Bahar arrested in the murder case of Iman Gazi, who was killed during the July uprising in the capital's Jatrabari area.
The two other accused are former Dhaka-5 lawmaker Harunur Rashid Munna and Jatrabari Thana Awami League President Kazi Monirul Islam Monu.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after hearing two separate petitions filed by police.
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case and Sub-Inspector (SI) Emadul Karim of Jatrabari Police Station produced the accused before the court and sought to have them shown arrested in the case.
In his petition, the investigating officer said preliminary evidence collected during the investigation indicated the involvement of former Additional IGP Iqbal Bahar in the killing. As he is already in jail in connection with another murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station, police sought to show him arrested in this case in the interest of a fair and impartial investigation.
Police also sought to show Harunur Rashid Munna and Kazi Monirul Islam Monu arrested in the same case.
According to the petition, preliminary evidence suggests that, acting on the direct instructions and with the backing of the two accused, Md Yasin Uddin opened fire on Iman Gazi, leading to his death.
Munna and Monu are also currently in jail in separate murder cases.
According to the case statement, Iman Gazi was shot dead on August 5, 2024 during the anti-discrimination student movement at Chittagong road in Jatrabari. His brother, Anwar Hossain, filed the murder case with the Police Station on August 28.
