ICT releases full 809-page verdict in Abu Sayed killing case

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday released the full 809-page verdict in the crimes against humanity case over the killing of Abu Sayed during the July 2024 mass uprising, detailing the convictions and sentences of 30 individuals, including former Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Vice-Chancellor Dr Hasibur Rashid.

The comprehensive judgment was published by International Crimes Tribunal-2, outlining the tribunal’s observations, legal reasoning, findings of fact and the basis for determining the punishments awarded to the convicts.

Earlier on April 9, a three-member bench of ICT-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, had delivered the verdict.

Under the judgment, two accused were sentenced to death, three to life imprisonment, five to 10 years’ imprisonment, eight to five years and 11 to three years in prison.

The death sentences were handed down to former Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment are former assistant police commissioner (Kotwali Zone) Arifuzzaman alias Jibon, former Tajhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rabiul Islam alias Nayan, and former BRUR camp in-charge Bibhuti Bhushan Roy alias Madhab.

The five convicts sentenced to 10 years in prison are former BRUR Vice-Chancellor Dr Hasibur Rashid alias Bacchu, former RMP Commissioner Moniruzzaman alias Beltu, former Mathematics Department associate professor of BRUR Mashiur Rahman, Public Administration Department associate professor Asaduzzaman Mondal alias Asad, and BRUR unit Chhatra League president Pomel Barua. The tribunal noted that all five are absconding.

Eight others who received five-year jail terms are BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, former assistant registrar Rafiul Hasan Russell, former RMP deputy commissioner Md Abu Maruf Hossain and additional DC Md Shah Nur Alam Patwari, Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad’s local president Dr Sarwar Hossain Chandan, BRUR BCL’s joint general secretaries Imran Chowdhury alias Akash and Masudul Hasan alias Masud, and former BRUR office assistant Mahabubar Rahman alias Babu.

The tribunal sentenced 11 others to three years’ imprisonment. They include former Assistant Registrar Hafizur Rahman alias Tufan, Section Officer Moniruzzaman Palash, BRUR unit Chhatra League General Secretary Mahafuzur Rahman Shamim, Vice-Presidents Fazle Rabbi alias Glorious Fazle Rabbi and Akhtar Hossain, Organising Secretaries Sezan Ahmed alias Arif and Dhananjay Kumar alias Tagor, Office Secretary Babul Hossain, MLSS employees Mohammad Nurunnabi Mondal and AKM Amir Hossain alias Amu, and Security Guard Nur Alam Mia.

The tribunal also ruled that contractual employee of the BRUR Proctor Office Anwar Parvez alias Apple had already served his sentence through the time spent in custody.
