HC grants bail to journalists Farzana Rupa, Shakil Ahmed in July uprising cases

The High Court on Monday granted bail to journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa in multiple cases filed over incidents linked to the July uprising.

Farzana Rupa was granted bail in six cases, while Shakil Ahmed secured bail in five cases. The court also issued a rule regarding their bail in another case.

Lawyers said the couple would not be released immediately as bail has not yet been granted in all the cases against them.

The order was passed by a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher after hearing separate petitions filed by the two journalists.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua appeared for the petitioners, while Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque represented the state.

Earlier, on April 21, hearings concluded on the bail petitions filed by the journalist couple in seven cases, including murder cases, linked to the July 2024 uprising. The court later fixed a date for the order, which was subsequently deferred.

On August 31, 2024, a court sent the couple to jail in a murder case filed over the death of garment worker Rubel under Adabor Police Station.

Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa were arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 21, 2024.

The following day, the court granted a four-day remand in connection with the Fazlul Karim murder case filed with Uttara East Police Station. On August 26, they were placed on another five-day remand in the Rubel murder case.
