Court grants three more days’ remand for Naser

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Lt Col Md Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), to three more days of remand in the Mahmudul Hasan murder case filed with Uttara East Police Station.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order.

Investigation Officer Mohammad Ashraful Alam, sub-inspector of Uttara East Police Station, had sought a fresh seven-day remand for the accused. State counsel Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the matter.

After the two-day remand granted on April 27 ended, Naser was produced before the court on Wednesday.

The remand petition said large-scale violent activities were carried out on his instructions and with his financing during the anti-discrimination student movement. It also said remanding the accused again was necessary to uncover the main mystery and ensure a proper investigation.

According to the case statement, on August 5, 2024, Mahmudul Hasan joined a procession of the anti-discrimination student movement. At around 4pm, when the protesters reached the paved road under the Azampur foot overbridge on the east side of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Uttara East Police Station area, the accused and unidentified others allegedly opened fire on them with illegal weapons.

Mahmudul Hasan was hit by bullets and fell to the ground. His family later filed a murder case with Uttara East Police Station over the incident.

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) arrested Md Afzal Naser from House No 864 on Road No 12 in Mirpur DOHS at dawn on March 30. Since then, he has been taken on remand several times in separate murder cases filed with Mirpur Model and Paltan police stations. So far, he has been remanded for 30 days.
