The High Court has issued a rule asking why the repeated show-arrest of former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in multiple cases should not be declared illegal.
The court also directed the authorities not to harass or arrest Ivy in any new cases.
A High Court bench led by Justice Rajik Al Jalil passed the order following a preliminary hearing on a writ petition filed over the matter.
Senior lawyer Sara Hossain and Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju appeared for Ivy during the hearing.
Advocate Saju said Ivy had already secured bail from the High Court in 10 cases. However, she was later shown arrested in two additional cases, prompting the filing of the writ petition challenging the legality of those show-arrest orders.
According to the case statement, garment worker Minarul Islam was shot in the Adamjee area on the evening of July 20, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement. He was rushed to the 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur, where doctors declared him dead. He was buried at his village home the following day.
In connection with the incident, Minarul’s brother, Nazmul Haque, filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station on September 23, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 131 others, along with 300 unidentified individuals, as accused.
Ivy was named as accused No 12 in the case. Several other cases were later filed against her.
