3 Hizb ut-Tahrir members remanded for planning 'March for Khilafah'

A Dhaka court has remanded three members of the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir after they were detained for holding a meeting to organize the "March for Khilafah" in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

The accused, Monirul Islam, has been granted a two-day remand, while Mohatasin Billah and Mahmoodul Hasan have been granted one-day remand.

On Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Jonayed passed the order after a hearing.

According to court sources, on this day, the investigating officer of the case presented the accused in court and applied for a 10-day remand.

The defence lawyers of the accused sought bail and requested the cancellation of the remand. After the hearing, the judge granted the remand.

The charges in the case indicate that the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir planned to disrupt the unity, integrity, public security, or sovereignty of Bangladesh and create public panic by propagating extremist ideologies and causing a severe deterioration of law and order, leading to violence.

They announced the "March for Khilafah" program at the northern gate of Baitul Mukarram after prayers on Friday.

To organize this, the accused Mohatasin Billah, 40,  had held a meeting at his residence in Uttara. In the course of an operation, two individuals were arrested at 12:05am on Friday. Other suspects managed to flee.

Later, at 12:30am on Friday, Mahmoodul Hasan, 21,  was arrested from a flat in Uttara. Upon interrogation, they revealed that they were active members of the government-prohibited organization Hizb ut-Tahrir.
