Top court upholds HC verdict dismissing 5 cases against Dr Yunus

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court's verdict that dismissed the proceedings of five cases filed under labour law against interim government Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.

The decision was made after rejecting separate leave-to-appeal petitions filed by the state against the High Court’s verdict.

A bench led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam delivered the verdict on Sunday.

Senior lawyer Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan represented Dr Yunus in court, while Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque argued on behalf of the state.

On October 24, a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued a verdict canceling the proceedings of five labor law cases and one defamation case against Dr Muhammad Yunus.

The cases were filed during the tenure of the previous Awami League government, accusing Dr Yunus, then chairman of Grameen Telecommunications, of violating labour laws.

The cases were initiated in the labour court on behalf of dismissed workers concerning a proposed trade union in 2019.
