Suspended assistant commissioner and executive magistrate of Lalmonirhat, Tapashee Tabassum Urmi, was granted bail on Thursday after surrendering before a Dhaka court in a defamation case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Imran Ahmed granted her bail following a hearing.
Urmi appeared in court around 10:30am and surrendered through her lawyer, seeking bail.
However, the plaintiff opposed the plea. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted the bail.
The case was filed over alleged defamatory remarks made by Urmi on social media.
The defamation case was filed by Abu Hanif, a senior member of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and media coordinator, on October 8.
The case accuses Tapashee of making derogatory remarks about Abu Sayed, the first deceased in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, as well as other deceased.
Her comments were allegedly shared via a Facebook post on October 5, where she also made adverse remarks about Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus.
Following the plaintiff’s testimony, the court issued a summons on November 28, ordering Tapashee to appear before the court.
