A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for former lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in a case filed over the attempted murder of Jubo Dal leader Hridoy Mia.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain issued the order on Tuesday.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Mirpur model police station Sub-Inspector Abdul Halim, requested a 10-day remand for Suman.
The defence lawyer appealed for bail and sought to cancel the remand request, but the prosecution supported the remand.
After hearing both sides, the judge approved a five-day remand.
According to the case details, on July 19 during recent student protests, Hridoy attended a rally at Mirpur-10 after performing Jummah prayers.
Leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliate organizations allegedly attacked the rally, threw crude bombs and fired shots, leaving Hridoy injured by gunfire.
Hridoy is senior vice president of Jubo Dal’s Chhatiain union unit in Madhabpur, Habiganj.
On September 23, Hridoy filed a case in this connection with Mirpur model police station, naming Suman as the third accused.
Police arrested Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in Mirpur in the early hours of Tuesday.
Before that, at around 1:15am, Suman posted from his verified Facebook account, saying he was “going with the police. See you in court. Please pray for me.”
In the 12th general election, held in January, this Supreme Court lawyer sought the nomination of the Awami League but did not receive it.
However, he was elected independently from Habiganj-4, defeating the Awami League candidate and former state minister for civil aviation Md Mahbub Ali.
