Order issued to confiscate immovable assets of ex-minister Saifuzzaman

A Dhaka court has ordered to confiscate the immovable assets owned by former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his family.

This order was issued on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Jagalul Hossain after a hearing.

Mahmud Hossain Jahangir, the public prosecutor for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed this information on Thursday.

According to court sources, the ACC's Deputy Director Ram Prasad Mandal filed a petition for the attachment of the immovable property owned by Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his wife, Rukmila Jaman.

After hearing the petition, the court issued the order.

Earlier, on October 7, the court imposed a travel ban on former Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his wife, Rukmila Jaman.

The application for the travel ban stated that there were concerns that Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his wife might leave the country, and that it was necessary to prevent their departure to ensure a fair investigation.

Additionally, following the fall of the Awami League government, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) directed to freeze of all bank accounts held by Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his wife, Rukmila Jaman.

Subsequently, under Section 23(1)(g) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, transactions in the personal accounts of Saifuzzaman's brother, Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, his wife, Imrana Jaman Chowdhury, and their daughter, Anicha Jaman, as well as accounts operated under their personal-owned enterprises, were initially suspended for 30 days.
