Former planning minister and Member of Parliament MA Mannan, who was undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, was released from the hospital on Thursday after being granted bail.
Following the completion of the necessary procedures around 2pm, Mannan was discharged by the medical board that had been formed for his treatment.
Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital Deputy Director Soumitra Chakraborty confirmed the release, adding: "The medical board discharged former minister MA Mannan from the hospital as he is now on bail."
Earlier, a six-member medical board had been constituted for his treatment, led by Dr Shishir Ranjan Chakraborty, professor of medicine at the hospital.
Mannan had been admitted to the hospital on Tuesday around 11am after being transferred from Sylhet Central Jail under tight security.
Following an assessment, doctors admitted him to the hospital's medicine department, where he was treated.
Sakhawat Hossain Rubel, district official of Sylhet Central Jail, confirmed that after all the bail documents were reviewed, Mannan was released from the hospital.
The Sunamganj District and Sessions Judge Court granted Mannan bail on Wednesday afternoon.
Abdul Hamid, Mannan's lawyer, said: "The court granted bail to MA Mannan considering his illness and age. We are pleased with the verdict."
On September 2, Hafiz Ahmad of Eroakhai village, Lakshmipur union, Doarabazar upazila, filed a case in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Nirjan Kumar Mitra of Sunamganj, accusing Mannan and others of an attack on students.
MA Mannan was arrested from his home in Shantiganj upazila on the night of September 19 and sent to court the following day. He had been in Sunamganj District Jail since then, with his initial bail application on September 23 being denied.
Sources from Sunamganj District Jail said that Mannan fell ill on October 5 while in custody. He was first taken to Sunamganj District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors recommended transferring him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
