A Dhaka court has granted police a five-day remand to question Md Jahangir Alam, former secretary of the Election Commission and the Ministry of Home Affairs, in a case filed over the killing of a teenager in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, during recent sutdent protests.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain passed the order on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman informed reporters that Jahangir Alam had been arrested in the capital’s Gulshan.
The police also referred to him as the "architect of dummy elections" in a message.
According to the case documents, 14-year-old Abdul Motalib joined student-led protests in Dhanmondi on August 4. He was shot in the chest and neck during the protests, leading to his death.
Abdul Matin, the father of the deceased, filed the case with Dhanmondi police station on August 26.
The case names 176 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and also accuses 250 to 300 unidentified persons.
