Former senior secretary Shah Kamal sent to jail

A Dhaka court has sent former senior disaster management and relief secretary Shah Kamal and two others to jail after expiry of his remand in a case filed under the Foreign Exchange Control Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tariqul Islam passed the order on Friday. 

The other accused in the case is business partner Nusrat Hossain.

Earlier in the day, investigation officer of the case Mohammadpur Police Station, SI Mohammad Rezaul produced the accused before the court and pleaded to keep them in jail. 

Following the petition, the judge sent them to jail.

On August 18, the court had approved a five-day remand for the accused.

On August 17 night, DMP conducted a raid and recovered cash worth around Tk3.11 crore, including local and foreign currencies, from the house of Shah Kamal on Babar Road in Mohammadpur.

Shah Kamal served as secretary from 2015 to 2019 and senior secretary from 2019 to 2020.

Of the Tk3.11 crore recovered, Tk3.01 crore was in cash, Tk74,400 was in prize bonds and Tk10.03 lakh was in various foreign currencies.

Police officials said that former secretary Shah Kamal kept these illegally earned money at home.

After the change of government, he went into hiding.
