Quota protest coordinator Arif Sohail placed on 6-day remand

A Dhaka Court on Monday granted a 6-day remand for former Brac University teacher Asif Mahtab Utsha and Jahangirnagar University quota reform movement coordinator Arif Sohail in a case filed in connection with Setu Bhaban vandalism case.

Inspector Abu Sayeed Miah of DB’s cantonment zonal team, also the investigation officer of the case, filed a 10-day remand prayer for each of them.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Moinul Islam granted the remand prayer in the hearing.

Earlier, Syed Zainul Abedin Mejba and many other lawyers applied for bail on behalf of the accused, seeking cancellation of their remand. The state party opposed it.

After hearing both sides, the court granted six days' remand to each.

Deputy Inspector (SI) Shah Alam, General Registration Wing of Banani police station confirmed this information.

The DB picked up Arif from his house in the Ambagan area, adjacent to Jahangirnagar University (JU), around 1 am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Asif Mahtab was picked up by the members of the Detective Branch from his house in the capital's Uttara.

On July 18, there was an attack on Setu Bhaban.

In this incident, Rabiul Islam, the caretaker of Setu Bhaban, filed a case with Banani Police Station as the plaintiff.

An unknown accused was named in the case. The plaintiff mentioned in the statement that the government establishment has suffered a loss of Tk300 crores.
