The Supreme Court children’s rights committee has written to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging him to ensure the protection of Palestinian children from Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip.
The letter was signed by the committee chairman, Appellate Division judge M Enayetur Rahim, on Tuesday, Mohammad Saifur Rahman, registrar of the Appellate Division, confirmed.
The other members of the committee are Justice Naima Haider, Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif, Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury.
The committee sent the letter through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the UN chief for the urgent implementation of measures to ensure the safety of children in Gaza, on the instructions of the chief justice.
The letter says the committee members are deeply concerned about the violation of articles 38 (1) and (4) of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and other international laws in the conflict-ridden area of Gaza.
The letter requested effective diplomatic intervention to end all forms of violence against children's lives and overall well-being, establish peace, provide necessary humanitarian aid and implement appropriate international measures.
“Since we have a collective moral responsibility to ensure the joy and prosperity of all children,” the committee said it is committed to supporting and contributing to all United Nations initiatives for the care and advancement of children worldwide.
