Dinajpur Municipality Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam on Thursday sought an unconditional apology to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for making derogatory comments about one of its judges centring verdict against Khaleda Zia.
Jahangir, also the assistant organizing secretary (Rangpur division) of BNP's central committee, appeared before the five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, in the morning following a summon order issued on August 17.
During the hearing of a contempt of court petition, the mayor offered the unconditional apology.
However, the Appellate Division did not exempt the mayor from personal appearance.
The Supreme Court bench fixed October 12 for further hearing of the petition.
The court ordered Jahangir to appear before it at 9am on that day.
On August 17, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court summoned the mayor, directing him to appear before the court.
The apex court also issued a contempt of court notice against Jahangir to explain why he should not be punished for making the comments.
Four lawyers filed the petition seeking necessary directives against the Faridpur municipality mayor.
The petition came following recent comments made by Jahangir Alam on a YouTube channel about Justice M Enayetur Rahim, a senior judge of the Appellate Division, centring a judgment in a case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The Supreme Court also directed Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman to immediately remove the YouTube video containing Jahangir's comments.
