High Court has ordered the authorities to issue singer Asif Akbar an electronic passport.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order on Wednesday.
Barrister Sajjad Haider was in the hearing on behalf of Asif in the court while Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Russel Chowdhury and Assistant Attorney General Golam Sarwar Payal represented the state.
On September 1 last year, the High Court issued a rule asking why the defendants should not be forced to issue a new electronic passport to singer Asif Akbar.
The director general of the Passport Department, the secretary of the Home Ministry, and the relevant defendants were all requested to reply to this ruling within two weeks.
Asif Akbar filed a petition with the High Court on August 23 asking for instructions on how to obtain a new e-passport.
According to the writ petition, Asif Akbar is a well-known vocalist both at the national and international level. Due to his lack of a passport, he is unable to attend any events outside of the country.
He submitted an application for e-passport on November 11, 2021. However, he has yet to receive a passport.
