A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Peruvian citizen Jaime Bardales Gomez, 60, to life term imprisonment.
He was arrested along with around 2.3kg cocaine worth Tk50 crore in September 2015.
Judge Fatema Ferdous of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 handed down the verdict in presence of the convict at the court.
The court also acquitted two other accused in the case- Md Abdus Salam and Salah Uddin, as the allegation brought against them could not be proved in the case.
The court in the verdict said the convict was given life in jail instead of death sentence considering his age and circumstantial evidences.
Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of seven prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case.
According to the case, Jaime arrived at the airport by an aircraft of Emirates Airlines from Brazil around 8:40am, and was waiting to have on-arrival visa from the airport's Immigration Police.
The Immigration Police, by the time, got information that the Peruvian national was carrying contraband drug items.
Later, Jaime was detained and interrogated till 1pm. At one stage, a joint team of the Customs and the DNC searched Jaime's trolley bag and found the cocaine consignment weighing around 2.3kg.
Jaime arrived Dhaka from Peru via Sao Paolo (Brazil) and his final destination was India.
After three months investigation, DNC Inspector Mofazzal Hossain, also investigation officer of the case, submitted to the then court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain Tipu.
Fourteen people were made prosecution witnesses in the charge-sheet.
Accepting the charge sheet, the magistrate sent it to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sheikh Hafizur Rahman and he shifted the case documents to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court for its disposal by holding trial.
The court framed charges against them on April 7, 2016.
According to the sources, the racket involved individuals from Spain, Brazil, Singapore and Bangladesh. But the IO submitted the charge sheet against three accused in the case.
