Report: Dhaka Wasa MD paid 5.8C in salaries in 13 years

Taqsem A Khan, managing director of Dhaka Wasa, has been paid around Tk5.8 crore in salaries in the last 13 years, according to a report submitted to the High Court.

Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) provided the information to the court in a report on Tuesday in compliance with an earlier directive.

The report said Dhaka Wasa MD and CEO Taqsem A Khan had drawn Tk4.51 crore of the total amount as Tk1.29 crore had been deducted as house rent, income tax and other relevant costs.

Lawyers for Wasa AM Masum and Syed Mahshib Hossain submitted the report by swearing an affidavit to the bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo.

The court has yet to fix a date for a hearing on the matter.

Following a writ petition filed by Consumers' Association of Bangladesh (CAB), the court on August 17 ordered the chairman of Dhaka Wasa to submit a report, detailing the total gross salaries, performance bonuses, travel and daily allowances, and all other benefits in terms of cash paid to Taqsem A Khan since his appointment.

The High Court also questioned the legality of Taqsem A Khan holding the position of MD and CEO of Dhaka Wasa and his Tk6.25 lakh gross monthly salary.

It issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why their inaction in not taking any step to remove Taqsem from the post of Wasa MD should not be declared illegal.

Taqsem A Khan was appointed Dhaka Wasa chief in 2009.

Despite widespread criticism of his role in ensuring quality of Wasa services, he was reappointed for a sixth term.
