Attack on Hasina’s Convoy: Ex-MP among 49 BNP men indicted

A Satkhira court has indicted 49 people, including former BNP MP Habibul Islam Habib, in an arms case filed over the attack on then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina’s convoy in Kolaroa of Sathkhira on August 30, 2002.

Judge of the Third Special Tribunal 3 and Satkhira Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court Bishwanath Mol framed the charges in presence of 40 out of 49 accused in the case.

Deposition recording in the case will begin on June 29. 

On August 30 in 2002, Sheikh Hasina was returning to Magura after visiting a Freedom Fighter's wife in Satkhira when her convoy got attacked in Kalaroa.

She survived the attack relatively unscathed but many Awami League leaders and workers were injured along with some journalists.

On February 5, 2021, a court in Satkhira convicted 50 people and sentenced them to different terms in jail in a case filed over the attack.

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Satkhira Humayun Kabir delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday. All of the accused are activists and workers of the BNP, with the former MP and two others facing 10 years in prison.

Among the convicts, former MP Habibul Islam Habib and two others were sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment while 47 others jailed for different terms. The minimum sentence is four years of imprisonment.
