Former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Mizanur Rahman has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Dhaka court.
The court on Wednesday found him guilty of accumulating over Tk3.28 crore through illegitimate means and concealing wealth amounting to Tk3.27 crore from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The verdict was delivered by Judge Monjurul Imam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court 6.
Alongside Mizanur Rahman, his wife, Sohelia Anar Ratna, nephew Mahmudul Hasan (a suspended sub-inspector of police) and his brother Mahbubur Rahman were also sentenced to seven years in prison for aiding Mizanur Rahman in acquiring illegal wealth.
Judge Monjurul Imam stated in his judgment that the prosecution had successfully proven the charges against all the accused.
The court also fined Mizanur Rahman Tk1.5 lakh, and in default of payment, he would have to serve an additional nine months in jail. The time already served by Mizanur Rahman would be deducted from his sentence, the judge said.
During the reading of the judgment, Mizanur Rahman, Mahmudul Hasan and Mahbubur Rahman were present in court. However, Ratna had been tried in absentia.
Prior to the judgment, the court recorded statements from 27 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant in the case.
The case was initially filed by the ACC on June 24, 2019, at its Integrated District Office in Dhaka against Mizanur Rahman and three others. Following an investigation, the ACC pressed charges against them on January 30, 2020.
On October 20, 2020, the judge framed charges against Mizanur Rahman and the three others.
On February 23 of the previous year, Mizanur Rahman was sentenced to three years in jail for giving Tk40 lakh as a bribe to an ACC official.
