Court rejects Samrat's bail again

A Dhaka court on Thursday scrapped former Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat’s bail plea for the second time in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

Judge Asad Mohammad Asifuzzaman of Dhaka Special Judge Court 6 passed the order as the lawyers pleaded for bail on Samrat’s behalf over his “poor health” ground.

Earlier, on March 31, the court had fixed April 13 for the bail hearing. On April 13, the bail plea was denied.

On November 12, 2019, the ACC filed the case against him after investigations alleging that the former leader of the Awami League's youth body acquired assets worth about Tk2.95 crore beyond his known income sources.

ACC Deputy Director and Investigating Officer Jahangir Alam presented the charge sheet before the court on November 26, 2020.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Samrat in a predawn raid from a village in Comilla's Chauddagram upazila on October 6, 2019.

In a subsequent action, police raided his Kakrail office in the capital and recovered huge quantities of foreign liquor, guns and rare species of wildlife skins.

Immediately after his arrest, a mobile court sentenced Samrat to six months of jail term for possessing the wildlife hides. A case was filed against him for possession of arms and drugs.

Later, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) filed a case against him under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the ACC filed the case alleging illegal acquisition of assets.

Between March 31 and April 10, Samrat secured bail in three cases among four filed against him.
