A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed charges against expelled Awami League leader and former director of Dhaka Wanderers Club Enamul Haque Enu and his two associates in a case filed over amassing illegal assets.
Judge Mohammad Iqbal Hossain of the Fifth Special Judge’s Court of Dhaka passed the order after rejecting a discharge petition filed by the accused.
The court also fixed April 24 for recording the deposition of witnesses in the case.
Enu was in the dock during the indictment hearing. He pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after the court read out the charges to him.
The two other accused – Abul Kalam Azad and Harunur Rashid – have been absconding since they obtained bail from the court.
Enu was one of the shareholders of Dhaka Wanderers Club and previously served as the vice president of Gandaria unit Awami League. His brother Rupon Bhuiyan was the general secretary of the unit.
The duo built properties in different parts of Dhaka with earnings from the casino through mutual consent and distribution of wealth among all the accused, according to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Verdict in the CID’s case filed for operating casino business legally and laundering money will be pronounced on April 6.
Assistant Director Md Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted the charge sheet on August 25 last year.
According to the case, Enu amassed Tk47.36 crore and concealed wealth worth Tk19,990,000 to the ACC. He also kept Tk2 crore in his possession illegally.
Besides, the anti-graft body also found evidence that Harunur and Abul had assisted Enu in acquiring assets worth around Tk4 crore illegally.
The case was filed on October 23, 2020 against the trio on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 21.89 crore beyond known sources of income.
Enu was arrested by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) during a crackdown on casino business on September 26, 2020. RAB filed seven cases against the expelled AL leader and his associates.
