A Khulna court sentenced a leader of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment in an explosive case.
Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Ashikur Rahman handed down the verdict on Monday.
The court has also fined Ziaur Rahman alias Sagar alias Sabbir Tk20,000, in default of which he would receive a further six months in jail, said lawyer Kazi Sabbir Ahmed.
According to the case statement, Sabbir was arrested from Khulna’s Miapara area on December 29, 2005. During the primary interrogation, he confessed to being involved with militants. RAB later seized explosives from Sabbir’s hostel room.
On December 30, a case was filed against him by RAB Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Yunus Ali at Daulatpur police station under the Explosives Act.
On January 19, 2006, SI Jahedul Haque Sarkar of Daulatpur police station submitted a charge sheet against him.
