A Dhaka court has placed Tariqul Islam Mumin, suspended vice-president of Chhatra League's central executive committee, on a fresh two-day remand in a case lodged over document forgery at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) document.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jassi passed the order after Shamim-ur-Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of the Tejgaon police station and the investigation officer in the case, produced Mumin in court at the end of a four-day police interrogation.
The other accused in the case, Farhad, a student of North South University, Fatima, an office assistant at the Prime Minister’s Office, and another person Nazim Uddin, have already made their confessional statements before the court on different dates of hearings.
They were sent to jail after the court recorded their statements.
Sub-Inspector Md Farid Miah, general recording officer (Tejgaon police station) of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, told Dhaka Tribune of the developments.
Earlier on Sunday, Fatema Begum, an office assistant at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), made a confessional statement regarding the PMO document scam.
After recording her statement, the court sent Fatema to jail.
On May 10, Fatema was arrested from her Motijheel Government T&T Colony residence.
“According to her statement, Fatema confessed to providing the document to a forgery racket for only Tk20,000. She also mentioned the names of others involved in the scam," said SI Farid.
According to the case details, the Ministry of Education had sent a document, containing a shortlist of candidates being considered for the post of treasurer at North South University, to the PMO for necessary action.
After being approved by the prime minister, the document, however, was replaced with a forged copy containing a different name before being sent to Bangabhaban for the president’s approval.
During preliminary investigations, investigators found that Tariqul Islam Mumin, vice-president of the Chhatra League central committee, Farhad, a student at North South University, and Fatima, an office assistant at the Prime Minister's Office,were involved with the forgery.
On May 5, Md Rafiqul Alam, Director-7 at the Prime Minister's Office, filed a case with Tejgaon police station against the accused.
Later, police arrested Mumin from Bhola, and Farhad along with another person was detained from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.
