A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to BNP Vice-Chairman Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, and Jatiyatabadi Hawkers Dal former general secretary Moqbul Hossain in a case over attacking police.
Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed passed the order, after case investigation officer and Detective Branch Inspector Delower Hossain produced them before his court with a 10-day remand plea.
On the other hand, the BNP leaders’ lawyers filed sought bail for their clients from the court.
After hearing the pleas from both sides, the court rejected police’s remand prayer and granted the trio bail.
Police had arrested Khokon, Hafiz and Moqbul at the High Court earlier in the morning, in the case filed at Shahbagh police station on Tuesday over charges of vandalism and assault on police.
Shahbagh police Sub Inspector Matiur Rahman had filed the case against 20 to 25 identified and 475 unidentified people.
Two policemen were injured in a clash between a group of BNP men and police, while the former were demonstrating in front of the High Court, seeking release of the party’s incarcerated Chairperson Khaleda Zia around noon that day.
Several vehicles were also vandalized during the clash.
