A Habiganj court has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for killing journalist Junaid in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj.
Additional District and Sessions Judge SM Nasim Reza delivered the verdict, after hearing the testimony of 20 witnesses. The court also fined them Tk10,000 each, in default, and they are to suffer another two years in jail.
The convicts are Farid Miah, Badshah Miah, Rahul Miah, all hailing from Sataihal village of Nabiganj.
Lawyer for the plaintiff, Adv Shah Fakhruzzaman said: "Police did a great job in solving the case. We are satisfied with the verdict, but we also want the authorities to bring back the principal convict Farid Mia from abroad, and ensure his punishment."
On the night of July 10, 2012, Junaid Ahmed, a reporter of a local newspaper Daily Bibiana, and general secretary of Gazipur union Jubo Dal, went missing.
The following day, his body was found in pieces on the railway tracks at Shaistaganj Junction Station.
Acting on the case filed on July 12, police submitted a charge sheet against four men before the court. Among the four accused, Abdul Hamid was killed in mob-beating and Farid Miah is on the run.
