Suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mizanur Rahman has been shown arrested in a case filed over the alleged exchange of Tk40 lakh in bribes.
Judge KM Imrul Kayes of the Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order on Sunday, after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Sheikh Md Fanafilya, and also Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, produced him before the court.
On July 17, Sheikh Md Fanafilya filed a petition with the court to show DIG Mizan arrested in the case.
On July 16, the ACC Director Sheikh Fanafillah also filed a case against DIG Mizanur Rahman, and suspended ACC Director Khandaker Enamul Basir, in connection with the alleged exchange of Tk40 lakh in bribes.
The case was filed after forensic tests confirmed the authenticity of the audio clips involving DIG Mizanur, and ACC Director Enamul speaking of the financial transaction.
Earlier, the ACC found incriminating evidence, of the involvement of Enamul Basir and DIG Mizan, in the alleged bribery scam.
Enamul, who was tasked with investigating the sources of properties belonging to DIG Mizan, reportedly leaked the probe report to the DIG in exchange for a bribe.
In a dramatic turn of events, Enamul was suspended on this ground, while Mizan, who faces corruption charges of amassing illegal wealth, was also handed down a similar punishment.
During a television interview, DIG Mizan claimed that Enamul Basir took bribes promising him a clean chit.
On June 24, ACC Director Manzur Morshed filed the case against Mizan, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna, nephew Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan, and younger brother Mahabubur Rahman. Mizan was suspended the next day.
Of them, DIG Mizanur Rahman, and his nephew Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan are now in jail custody in the case.
They were accused of accumulating huge amount of illegal wealth, and concealing information on their statements to ACC.
The ACC has found evidence of Mizanur’s illegal assets worth over Tk30.7 million.
On July 2, a Dhaka court sent Mizanur Rahman to jail after turning down his bail petition in the graft case.
