War crimes: Accused gets bail on health grounds

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has granted bail to a war crimes accused during the 1971 Liberation War.

A three-member tribunal, led by ICT Chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam passed the bail on Wednesday.

The accused Gulzar Hossain Khan, 80, of Narail was given bail on three conditions, considering his illness and that he cannot move by himself due to leg injuries caused by an accident.

The conditions are- Gulzar has to be present whenever the court summons him; he has to stay in contact with his relatives in Dhaka and he cannot contact the other witnesses of the case.

He was primarily accused of his involvement in the killings of 2,700 people including Hindus, pro Awami League men and general people, which took place on the banks of Chitra River in Narail Sadar during the Liberation War in 1971.

Advocate Abdus Sattar Palwan represented the defendant while Prosecutors Razia Sultana Chaman and Shahidur Rahman stood for the state.

Earlier, the court granted bail to another accused Md Badrudduza.

There were five charges of crimes against humanity accepted against 12 accused, on December 26, 2017.

Of the 12, five are in jail and 7 are hiding at the moment.

The charge hearing will be held on 30 April.
