A Chattogram court has sentenced five people to death for killing an expatriate in the city seven years ago.
After examining records and witness testimonies, Judge of the Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court Jannatul Ferdous on Tuesday handed down the verdict in presence of only one of the convicts.
The other four have gone into hiding after securing bail from the court earlier.
The five convicts are - Babul Barua, Mujibur Rahman, Kanon Barua Jewel, Sanjay Banik and Md Monir.
Additional Public Prosecutor Taslim Uddin said only Kanon was present in court to face the judgment.
Bangladeshi-origin American citizen Nurul Alam, 56, was killed at his own residence at the city’s Oxygen area under Bayezid Bostami police station on May 30, 2011.
Police had recovered his body that day, and later arrested the five accused in connection with the murder during several raids.
