Man jailed for life for raping mentally challenged child

A Chapainawabganj court has sentenced a man to lifetime imprisonment with hard labour for raping a mentally challenged child in the district's Bholahat upazila.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Ziaur Rahman issued the verdict at Chapainawabganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Wednesday afternoon.
The convict, Golam Kibria, from Borogachi Uttorpara village under Jambaria union in Bholahat, was present at the court when the verdict was delivered.
The court also charged him with a fine of Tk1 lakh, and three additional years in prison in case of default.
According to the case documents, Kibria raped his neighbour's mentally challenged daughter on May 28, 2016 after luring her into his bedroom.
The child's father filed a case against Kibria with Bholahat police station.
Sub-Inspector Abdur Sobur Khan of the police station, who investigated the case, submitted the charge sheet before the court on October 31, 2016.
Based on the evidence and testimonies, the court issued the verdict around 12:30am on Wednesday.
