Unmasking 'Pani Jahangir': The peon worth 400C

Since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday disclosed that one of her household staff members had amassed a fortune worth Tk400 crore, the question on everyone's lips is who is this wealthy peon?

Investigations reveal that the man in question is Jahangir Alam, also known as “Pani Jahangir,” hailing from Khilpara union, Noakhali. His father was the late Rahmat Ullah.

Jahangir, during Sheikh Hasina's tenure in opposition, served as a staff member at her residence Sudha Sadan. He earned the nickname “Pani Jahangir” as he used to carry drinking water for Sheikh Hasina at various events. When Sheikh Hasina became prime minister, he continued working as her personal staff.

Further investigations reveal that Jahangir, despite his position, would identify himself as the prime minister's personal assistant. Leveraging this identity, he engaged in various lucrative activities, amassing wealth and properties in Noakhali and Dhaka. He was also often seen carrying a licensed pistol.

According to sources familiar with the matter, a notification was issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on December 6, saying Jahangir Alam had no connection with the head of government or her office. The notice warned the public to remain cautious and seek assistance from law enforcement if necessary.

Following his financial ascent, Jahangir ventured into politics, securing the vice president position of the Chatkhil upazila Awami League. He even sought nomination for the 12th general election with the boat symbol. Despite failing to secure the symbol, he declared his intent to run as an independent candidate, though he later withdrew.

However, allegations surfaced that he had attempted to sabotage the boat symbol candidate HM Ibrahim in Noakhali1.

The PMO issued its statement distancing itself from Jahangir during these activities.

Reports indicate that Jahangir has acquired multiple plots and flats in Dhaka.

He owns a 2,500-square-foot flat in Dhanmondi under his wife's name and an eight-storey house in Maijdee, Noakhali.

Jahangir also invested substantial amounts in his political ambitions to become a lawmaker in this year’s election, holding large rallies and meetings funded by lakhs of taka. Notably, would invite influential people to his constituency and used to travel by helicopter.

In addition to the luxurious Dhanmondi flat, Jahangir owns shops in Mohammadpur and New Market as well as a seven-storey building and two flats in Mirpur.

His affidavit for the 12th general election disclosed an annual income of approximately Tk50 lakh from various sources, including agriculture, rental income, shares, savings certificates and bank deposits.

His affidavit also revealed assets worth over Tk2.5 crore in his name and over Tk1.25 crore in his wife's name in bank deposits. He has significant investments in different companies and Tk6 crore in a partnership firm.

Local sources say Jahangir, leveraging his position at the PMO, engaged in lobbying, tender manipulation and bribery. He also controlled the jhut (waste fabric) business in the Gazipur EPZ area using his connections.

Attempts to contact Jahangir for comments were unsuccessful as his phone remained switched off, with sources confirming that his phone was active until the Prime Minister's remarks, after which he went into hiding.

One reliable source said Jahangir was planning to leave the country to avoid imminent arrest.
