The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a lawsuit against an official of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and his wife on graft allegations.
The accused, Mumitur Rahman, senior assistant chief at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, and his wife Jasmine Akhter, have been sued for allegedly amassing illegally obtained wealth worth Tk51,191,650.
ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed the filing of the lawsuit to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
Salahuddin Ahmed, deputy director ACC, filed the case at the anti-graft watchdog's Integrated District Office 1 in Dhaka in this regard.
The ACC has also clamped a travel ban on Mumitur.
Despite being a government official at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Mumitur was known as the "cashier" of SM Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim, who is currently under ACC investigation on charges of amassing wealth by illegal means.
According to the ACC case file, GK Shamim, during interrogation, mentioned Mumitur's name as his alias.
Earlier on September 30, the ACC launched a drive against businessmen and gamblers linked to illegally operated casinos. The anti-corruption body has so far filed 18 cases on charges of amassing illegal wealth.
A seven-member team led by ACC Director Syed Iqbal is in charge of conducting the investigations.
