RMU VC allegedly forced to sign resignation, one arrested

A case has been filed over the alleged harassment of Rajshahi Medical University (RMU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Jawadul Haque and forcing him to sign a resignation letter after a group of people entered his office. Police have arrested one person in connection with the incident.

University Section Officer and the VC’s personal assistant Nazmul Hossain filed the complaint with Rajpara Police Station around midnight on Tuesday, and police later recorded it as a case.

The arrested person, Abdus Samad, 57, was detained around 2:00am on Wednesday. Police could not immediately confirm whether he was affiliated with any political party.

RMP Deputy Commissioner Gaziur Rahman confirmed the case on Wednesday afternoon, saying 50–60 unidentified people had been named as accused. Police were conducting drives to arrest the others.

Rajpara Police Station OC Abul Kalam Azad said Samad was identified and arrested after police reviewed CCTV footage. He would be produced before a court later in the day.

Prof Md Jawadul Haque said a group of politically backed local contractors and outsiders suddenly entered his office and accused him of favouring Dhaka-based contractors over local ones.

Earlier on Tuesday, allegations surfaced that Prof Md Jawadul Haque had been forced to sign a resignation letter around noon. His personal assistant Nazmul Hossain was also allegedly compelled to resign.

“They called me an ‘Awami League stooge’ and chanted slogans. At one point, they forcibly took my signature on a resignation letter. They then forced me out of the office and locked it,” he said.
