Protesters have demanded the sexual offenders during Pohela Boishakh celebration on the Dhaka University campus be brought to book immediately.
Protesting the sexual assaults, Bangladesh Students’ Union formed a human chain on Monday morning that stretched from Oporajeyo Bangla to Curzon Hall.
Speakers at the human chain also demanded the resignation of the Dhaka University proctor, terming him a "liar."
They accused Proctor Amzad Ali of concealing information, negligence in discharging his duties, and holding others responsible for the incident to avoid his own responsibility.
General students of the university joined the human chain boycotting their classes.
Different students' and cultural organisations including National Girl Child Advocacy Forum, Udichi Shilpi Goshthi and Youth and Hunger Bangladesh also joined the programme.
Dhaka University Teachers' Association also staged a separate human chain in front of Oporajeyo Bangla. However, they expressed solidarity with the Students’ Union programme.
Teachers of the association said those who made bomb attacks on the Ramna Batamul and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi programmes are involved with the incidents of sexual harassment during the Pohela Boishakh celebration.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union President Hasan Tarek said: "The university administration is trying to divert the incidents of sexual assaults to another direction."
Holding the university proctor responsible for the incidents, he said: "The proctor did not take any action against previous incidents of sexual assaults that resulted in the repetition of such incidents."
He said they would begin a movement to unseat the vice chancellor if their ultimatum of the proctor's resignation and arrest of the culprits are not met by 11am Tuesday.
Bangladesh Students' Union will also submit a memorandum to the home ministry on Tuesday, demanding the punishment of the sexual offenders.
Jamshed Anwar, general secretary of Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, said: "The state cannot avoid the responsibility of the incidents. The real culprits should be identified and brought to book without any delay."
When thousands of people were celebrating Pohela Boishakh, gangs of unruly youths swooped on around five to seven women and sexually harassed them at Suhrawardy Udyan and some parts of Dhaka University campus.
The attackers were honking vuvuzelas during the assaults to suppress the victims’ screams, witnesses said, adding they also filmed the incidents with inhuman enthusiasm.
Bangladesh Students’ Union DU unit President Liton Nandi received severe injuries while trying to rescue a woman near the TSC.
