Spokesperson of a faction of Gonojagoron Moncho Imran H Sarker has claimed that “the sheer indifference and negligence of the governments and the law enforcers” is behind such crimes like murders of free-thinkers.
He said: “The apathy of the government and the law enforcers in addressing such attacks has been encouraging the religious extremists to be involved in the killings of the secular bloggers and writers.”
The convener of the anti-war criminal platform made the statement while addressing a programme staged in protest against the murder of Oyasiqur Rhaman.
The organisation brought out a protest procession on Dhaka University campus around 5:30pm Monday, protesting the killing of the blogger.
Oyasiqur was hacked to death in the capital's Dipika Mosque Lane in Tejgaon in the afternoon, a month after the murder of another secular blogger and science writer Avijit Roy.
Comemorating Oyasiqur, Imran said: “Although he was not a direct activist of Gonojagoron Moncho, we will continue our ongoing protest as he was a dedicated supporter of the anti-war criminal platform.”
Regarding the ruthless murder, he said: “Those, who killed Oyasiqur, have violated the constitution of the country as according to it all Bangladeshis are free to express his/ her thoughts.”
“None has rights to kill someone for expressing his ideologies.”
The platform has been staging different programmes since the last week of February, protesting the murder of Avijit Roy, who was hacked to death near the TSC roundabout on DU campus on the evening of February 26.
Urging the government and the law enforcing agencies to bring all the killers and attackers under trial, Imran further said: “Such killings will stop once the government and law enforcing agency members sincerely address the attacks on secular writers.”
He also alleged that instead of giving punishments, the government is patronising those, who are against the independence of the country or are trying to violate the constitutional rules.
Oyasiqur was an admirer of Avijit Roy.
After Avijit’s killing, Oyasiqur paid tribute to him making his Facebook profile and cover photos with the text: #iamavijit and words cannot be killed.
He was member of eight Facebook group pages including, Atheist Bangladesh.
The police said he has been murdered in the same way blogger Rajeeb Haider was killed.
Rajeeb, known as Thaba Baba in the blogging community, was hacked to death on February 15, 2013 near his Pallabi house.
