War criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman will file a review petition against the Appellate Division verdict which upheld the tribunal's death penalty awarded to the Jamaat leader.
Kamaruzzaman's lawyer Tajul Islam made the statement while talking to the journalists after meeting the Jamaat leader at Dhaka Central Jail on Saturday morning.
Talking about the execution of the verdict, Tajul said: “Kamaruzzaman can not be executed even an hour before the disposal of the review petition.
“If anyone tries to contradict this statement then they are just showing their incapabilities regarding the knowledge of law or is committing mistake purposely.”
“Kamaruzzaman believes he will be acquitted if justice is ensured because he is innocent,” he added.
A team of lawyers visited Kamaruzzaman at the jail in the morning.
The International Crimes Tribunal 2 issued a death warrant for Kamaruzzaman on Thursday after the apex court released full text of the verdict.
The tribunal sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death on May 9, 2013, for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Five out of seven charges were proved by the prosecution in the case.
Kamaruzzaman appealed against the judgement after a month.
The Apex Court handed down capital punishment to Kamaruzzaman for the massacre of Sherpur’s Sohagpur village, which has come to be widely known as “Bidhoba Palli,” or the village of widows, following a mass killing in 1971.
